Exodus (Program #120) – The Priestly Garments (5) The Priestly Garments (5) Breastplate and Onyx Stones

In Genesis, God created man from the dust of the ground.  Soon after He placed man by a river.  By the flow of the river were precious stones.  Though man was made of dust, his destiny in God’s plan is to become something so precious; not precious dust, but precious stones.

We want to take another look today at this most unique item of the priestly garments, and that is the Ephod.  We mentioned earlier that the Hebrew word Ephod has no English equivalent.  This is the actual Hebrew word.  It refers to an item that we don’t know a great deal about, other than it look somewhat like a vest, apparently from the description here in Exodus 28.  What do we know about the Ephod and what it look like?

Exodus (Program #119) – The Priestly Garments (4) Breastplate and Ephod

When God met with Moses on Mount Sinai, He gave him the ten commandments, but He also gave him detailed instructions on how to build the tabernacle, a kind of portable temple.  Then He turned to the elaborated garments to be worn by the priests, especially the high priest.  Each of the detailed account provides us with marvelous pictures of our own experience of Christ.  The priestly garments, these are our focus on today’s life study of the Bible.

Exodus (Program #118) – The Priestly Garments (3) Beauty and Glory

If we happen to be on the street in our city and find ourselves in trouble, we would immediately turned to someone wearing a uniform.  There is something about what the uniform expresses that qualifies the person wearing it.  He or she has instant credibility by virtue of what they express.  What do we express?  Can people see Christ within by looking at our outward expression?

Exodus (Program #117) – The Priestly Garments (2)

Today we are going to bring you again one of our highlight programs from a previous life study and in our life study of Exodus, we are at a point of looking at the precious stones.   These messages are bringing us to the vision in Scripture of God’s building.  We had an outstanding message several months ago when we were in the life study of the book of Acts on this very thing, God’s building as seen in Scripture.  We feel it is a good time to go back and revisit that message.

As Christians we all know Christ as our Savior and our Lord.  We may also know Him as our friend even our healer and many other precious items.   Yet can we say that we, like Peter in Acts 4, know Christ as the stone for God’s building?

Exodus (Program #116) – The Priestly Garments (1)

Of all the major items presented to man in the Bible, perhaps none is as misunderstood and mysterious as the church.  Of course, to most people, the church is quite simple; it’s the building on the street corner.  Others though have seen more, that the church is not the physical building at all but is really composed of all the believers, the people of God.  But the revelation doesn’t stop here.  We are going to see a clear and wonderful picture of the church, God’s building.

Exodus (Program #115) – The Lighting of the Lamps and the Garments for the Priesthood (2)

Exodus 27:20 speaks about the Holy Place within the tabernacle and calls that place, the Tent of Meeting.  To God’s Old Testament people it represented their corporate interaction with God.  Bible scholars have  long realized to us, the New Testament Christians, this sanctuary in the tabernacle is a picture of the gathering of the believers, the meetings of the church.  How to meet as seen by the activities in the Holy Place.

Exodus (Program #114) – The Lighting of the Lamps and the Garments for the Priesthood (1)

The Bible is a marvelous book.  It truly is like no other book ever written.  But most of us have experienced from time-to-time that it can also be a mysterious book, not that easy to understand.  We may not see that much each time when we come to it.  Yet thankfully others have gone before us.   Through the generations, faithful men have given the keys that unlock this book of books.   Such ones in this century were Watchman Nee and his co-worker Witness Lee.  They not only received the keys, but they passed them on to us.

Exodus (Program #113) – The Court of the Tabernacle (4)

There is a powerful verse in the gospel of John that says when the Spirit of reality comes, He will convict the world concerning sin, righteousness and judgment.  Actually, every saved person has experienced this very thing.  In fact, without this experience we will never appreciate the need for our wonderful redeeming Christ.  But this same experience is described in the details of the gate of the tabernacle in Exodus.

Exodus (Program #112) – The Court of the Tabernacle (3)

The door or entrance to a building usually says a lot about that building.  For example, the entrance to a state capital or even the White House will give us an impression of the nature of what is within the building.  What about the building of God?  what does the entrance say about the nature and expression of God’s House?  Stay with us today as we look at the gate of the tabernacle of God and in it find the full salvation of Jesus Christ.

Exodus (Program #111) – The Court of the Tabernacle (2)

The book of Exodus is the story of how God delivered His people out of their bondage and captivity. Eventually bringing them to the mountain of God to receive the ten commandments. Though this may have seemed like the high peak of their experience to them; to God, all of these was in preparation for the real peak – the revelation of the tabernacle, His building. How about us? Are we like the children of Israel concerned for our own well-being and personal spiritual mountaintop experiences or are we occupied with what occupies God?
