At the time the Lord Jesus was on the earth, the Biblical religion of the day Judaism had many strict ordinances prohibiting all manner of activities on their Holy Sabbath day including healing the sick. And yet, the Lord Jesus purposely broke many of the ordinances. As He not only healed the sick, against the traditions and regulations of the Sabbath, but He would do so in the presence of the religious leaders, many times offending them. We will look at an interesting case today of the violation of the religious regulations with a purpose as the Lord Jesus was continuing to usher in the real New Testament Jubilee.

When a mustard seed is planted according to the natural law of life, it grows into a small and tender herb with succulent leaves. Yet, the parable in Luke 13 tells of a mustard seed growing into a great tree with birds lodging in the branches. And this unlikely distortion is presented as a picture of an aspect of the kingdom of God. Is this a positive development, or one from which we should take a strong and serious warning from the Lord?  We’ll explore it on today’s life study.

Peace is surely a vital aspect of the divine life of Christ. When we receive Him as our life and savior, we all experience peace within, peace with God, and even peace with one another. So what did the Lord Jesus mean in Luke 12 when He said, ” I have come to cast fire on the earth… Do you think that I have come to give peace on the earth? No, I tell you, but rather division.” This is a mysterious portion of the Word to understand. Yet, surely it matches many of the experiences of His seeking ones. We’ll explore this passage on today’s life study of the Bible.

Consider for a moment the religions of the world whether or not you agree with the various approaches in teachings, it’s fair to say that all religions begin of good intentions and noble ideals.  But inevitably, one common condition befalls all religions over time – hypocrisy.  The difference between those high ideals and teachings and the eventual practices and living of its adherence.  The one striking exception to this universal is the life and the living of the Lord Jesus Christ.  His living on earth was in stark contrast to the hypocrisy of the religion of that day and the reality of His divine life live out in His members remains in the same contrast today.  As we fellowship on chapter 12 of Luke and three warnings that we are going to get into today.

In Luke 11, the disciples find the Lord Jesus praying to the Father. They take the opportunity to ask the Lord to teach them how to pray. No doubt thinking that if they receive the proper instruction then they would soon enter into a realm where they received answers to all their prayers. Well, we need to ask ourselves, what is it to pray? Is it just to make our needs and requests known to God and then wait in faith for Him to grant all of our requests? Well, we will get light today from the Gospel of Luke chapter 11 that we have likely never received. We come to this message from Luke on today’s life study of the Bible.

There is a small village just outside of Jerusalem called Bethany. It was the home of two sisters named Martha and Mary, who not only loved the Lord Jesus deeply, but were compelled to serve Him as well. This should be the case for any true lovers of the Lord Jesus after we have experienced His undying love for us. We should not only love Him in return, but be filled with the heart’s desire to serve Him.

We all know the story of the good Samaritan. Here’s a man walking down the road and he’s beaten up and left for dead by robbers, while many righteous people pass by to take no account of his pitiful condition. Then at last, a Samaritan, one from a rejected place, comes by and cares for the beaten man. It’s a wonderful story with a valuable moral. But to really understand it, we must know the characters. Who, for example, is the beaten man? And, who is the good Samaritan? If you’ve always thought the moral of this story is for us to be kind to our neighbors, you may want to pay particular attention to our program today because we will see in this parable in another light.

Luke (Program #22) – The Ministry of the Man-Savior in His Human Virtues with His Divine Attributes from Galilee to Jerusalem (1)

As the Lord Jesus and His disciples were journeying from Galilee through Samaria to Jerusalem three cases are chronicled in Luke chapter 9 regarding different ones who desire to follow Him.  Verse 57 says “And as they went along the road, someone said to Him, I will follow You wherever You go. And Jesus said to him, The foxes have holes, and the birds of heaven have roosts, but the Son of Man does not have a place where He may lay His head. And He said to another, Follow Me. But he said, Lord, permit me to go first and bury my father. But He said to him, Let the dead bury their own dead, but you go and announce the kingdom of God everywhere. And another also said, I will follow You, Lord; but first permit me to say farewell to those in my house. But Jesus said to him, No one who puts his hand on the plow and looks behind is fit for the kingdom of God.”

Mark (Program #56) – A Life Fully According To and For God’s New Testament Economy (16)

The gospel of Mark ends with the Lord’s ascension. So what is the Lord Jesus doing now that He has resurrected and ascended?

In order to find out what the Lord is doing after His ascension, we need the book of Acts. Acts 1:5 says, “For John baptized with water, but you shall be baptized in the Holy Spirit not many days from now.”   And Act 1: 8 says, “But you shall receive power when the Holy Spirit comes upon you, and you shall be My witnesses both in Jerusalem and in all Judea and Samaria and unto the uttermost part of the earth.“

Mark (Program #35) – The Preparation of the Slave-Savior for His Redemptive Service (9)

Just two days prior to His death the Lord Jesus gathered with His disciples in a small house in a tiny village of Bethany just outside of Jerusalem.

This little house, the house of a leper that Jesus had cleansed in the beginning of His ministry has become His dwelling place during His final days. Each night He would depart Jerusalem and return to this very humble and simple home. Now as the hours of His death approaches one of the great encounters in all the scriptures take place. Let’s read the account in Mark 14:1-8

“Now the Passover and the Feast of Unleavened Bread were two days away. And the chief priests and the scribes were seeking a way to seize Him by craftiness and kill Him,  For they said, Not at the feast, lest there be a tumult by the people.  And while He was in Bethany in the house of Simon the leper, as He reclined at table, a woman came, having an alabaster flask of ointment, of very costly pure nard, and she broke the alabaster flask and poured it over His head.  But there were some who were indignantly commenting among themselves: Why has this waste of the ointment been made?  For this ointment could have been sold for over three hundred denarii and given to the poor. And they were infuriated with her.  But Jesus said, Leave her alone. Why do you trouble her? She has done a noble deed on Me.  For you always have the poor with you, and whenever you want, you can do good for them. But you do not always have Me.  She has done what she could; she has anointed My body beforehand for the burial.
And truly I say to you, Wherever the gospel is proclaimed in the whole world, what this woman has done shall also be told as a memorial of her.”
