The garment worn by the high priest in the Old Testament gives us a wonderful picture of many aspects of Christ.  But the breastplate that was the outer-most item of the priestly garment also gives us a picture of God’s redeemed people, the church and how God conveys His word and will to man through the church.

It was recently reported, that although sales for the Bible has actually increased in recent years, reading the Bible is at an all time low.  The reasons given by most people for not reading the Bible that they own is that they simply don’t understand the Bible.  Well, we all experience not being able to understand the Bible from time to time.  Many of the Old Testament books are difficult.  But when we are given the keys to unlock all the marvelous types and pictures that are given to us in the Old Testament becomes a brand new book.  More of those keys are waiting for us today.

Exodus (Program #125) – The Priestly Garments (10 & 11) Urim and Thummin

There is a very tender picture of our Lord Jesus holding His redeemed ones in love in the Old Testament book of Exodus.  This picture matches the New Testament revelation as well as our own experience of being held by His love.  But the picture in the Old Testament reveals that God’s people are not only held by His love, they are also upheld by His strength.

This week we have been looking at Ephod and the 3 items that were attached to it or added to it in the priest’s garment.  These are the two shoulder pieces that had onyx stones attached and then also the breast plate worn in front by the priest.  This piece also contains precious stones, 12 of them actually.  We seen that the Ephod, this vest-like outer garment is a clear picture of Jesus Christ.  What are these added items, these precious stone items signify?

Exodus (Program #122) – The Priestly Garments (7) Held to the Lord, Transformation, Onyx Stone

The details that God revealed to Moses regarding the design and furnishings of the tabernacle convey a lot of spiritual insights into our own experience of Christ and the Christian life.  In a similar way, Jehovah was careful and very specific as He revealed all the items that the High Priest had to wear in conducting the priestly service in the tabernacle.  Among these items, six in total, the Ephod is most mysterious and full of marvelous, spiritual meaning.  We return today for another look at the priestly garments.

The New Testament is full of plain words concerning Christ, our experience of Christ and the church.  But the details of these items are actually more clearly seen in the Old Testament in such books as Genesis and Exodus.  The preciousness of our dear Lord Jesus for example is clearly portrayed in the details of the priestly garments, that is if you know where to look.  Don’t miss the preciousness of Christ on today’s life study of the Bible.

Exodus (Program #120) – The Priestly Garments (5) The Priestly Garments (5) Breastplate and Onyx Stones

In Genesis, God created man from the dust of the ground.  Soon after He placed man by a river.  By the flow of the river were precious stones.  Though man was made of dust, his destiny in God’s plan is to become something so precious; not precious dust, but precious stones.

We want to take another look today at this most unique item of the priestly garments, and that is the Ephod.  We mentioned earlier that the Hebrew word Ephod has no English equivalent.  This is the actual Hebrew word.  It refers to an item that we don’t know a great deal about, other than it look somewhat like a vest, apparently from the description here in Exodus 28.  What do we know about the Ephod and what it look like?

Exodus (Program #119) – The Priestly Garments (4) Breastplate and Ephod

When God met with Moses on Mount Sinai, He gave him the ten commandments, but He also gave him detailed instructions on how to build the tabernacle, a kind of portable temple.  Then He turned to the elaborated garments to be worn by the priests, especially the high priest.  Each of the detailed account provides us with marvelous pictures of our own experience of Christ.  The priestly garments, these are our focus on today’s life study of the Bible.
